Long before the first Pontiac automobile rolled off the assembly line in late 1926, the Pontiac Buggy Company, formed by Edward M. Murphy was selling horse-drawn buggies to giddy customers looking for that feeling of, well, 1 hp. As he looked toward the future, Murphy saw the horsedrawn buggy going the proverbial way of the buggy whip and created the Oakland Motor Car Company in 1907. A couple years later when GM acquired Oakland, they went through some serious growing pains, but emerged as a customer-savvy competitor for the popular Fords under the Pontiac banner. Unfortunately Murphy, true to the law sharing his name, was unable to bask in the success of his creation, having died unexpectedly the summer after joining the GM family.

Dci 455 Pontiac Engine Valvetrain
A basic valvetrain setup with no ultra-unobtainable parts makes the top end of Don Johnston's Pontiac affordable to the real-world rodder. Don believed that smaller-stem valves and Titanium retainers would have picked up a few points and rpm, but wasn't worth the coin at the time.

Dci 455 Pontiac Engine Ross Piston
The Ross pistons incorporate an accumulator groove between the top and second ring to help catch excess cylinder pressure that blows by the top ring. Coupled with a big second ring gap, ring flutter is alleviated and the top ring seal stays good and tight.

The dimpling DCI did was fairly random, but quite effective. Incredibly, the pistons look like they've never been run.

Dci 455 Pontiac Engine Oil Restrictors
With the lifters removed it is easy to see the addition of the oil restrictors to the lifter bores. For a roller cam application DCI recommends using one of the available lifter bore girdles to keep the "floating" lifter bores from exiting the block. Also, the 55 in the lifter valley marks this as a 455 block. The easy-to-remember coding makes it easy to spot a 350 (50 casting) or a 400 (00 casting) with the last two numbers in the cubic-inch size.

A keen eye will look right past the shiny Eagle rod and note the open tapped hole in the block. These blocks were all drilled for four-bolt mains, but very few saw actual four-bolt caps on them.

Bolting on a Melling M-Select 10541 gets you a 30 percent increase in volume (over the standard M54 pump), higher pressure, and a housing that is CNC-machined and phosphate-coated.

Dci 455 Pontiac Engine Ports
Don believes the tall, thin ports are perfect for building bottom-end power. For a top-end drag racer though, he prefers a wide port entry.

Dci 455 Pontiac Engine Combustion Chamber
Always pushing for more power and efficiency, Johnston shaped and dimpled the combustion chamber so that it would promote a super-clean burn. Did it work? The chamber seen here was never even cleaned after running.

Dci 455 Pontiac Engine Manifold
Pontiac manifolds have the benefit of a built-in heat shield as the valley pan blocks hot oil from splashing on the bottom of the intake and heating the air/fuel mixture.

Dci 455 Pontiac Engine Holley Dominator
The modified Holley Dominator is massive and with the size 98 jets that were installed, one would think even too huge. Not so. The dyno showed the engine to be lean enough that the headers were glowing an almost transparent shade of red.

Originally equipped with a carb spacer featuring a "spear" in the center of the butterflies, the team found the initial setup extremely lean so they switched to this recessed-bottom spacer to change the fuel signal the carb sees.

Hard-core Poncho guys recognize the BOP Engineering belt-drive setup. This is the same deal that was on Jon Kaase's previous Pontiac EMC entry that used the Don Johnston-designed Tiger Heads.

Dci 455 Pontiac Engine Dyno
Anthony Milano preps the engine for its initial break-in and warm-up pulls. Basically flying blind with a broken timing light, the guys guess at timing and cringed when they saw the headers glowing bright red. Head tech honcho Wesley Roberson asked if they wanted to abort, but Johnston said he'd rather blow it up than quit.
