Global West offers a disc brake package called Cat 5, which we originally thought would fit our 15-inch Bassett steel wheel. The Cat 5 system has a special two-piece 11.75-inch rotor with a custom billet hub; calipers are four-piston Wilwoods. The offset on the hub is designed so that a 1 1/4-inch-wide stock car rotor can be used while keeping the load on the spindle in the correct place; these are widely used in stock car classes where a stock 15-inch wheel is required.

In the midst of the suspension install at Global West's San Bernardino, California, facility, you can see in the foreground where we were in the process of trial fitting the larger Cat 5 brake system into the Bassett wheel. Note the 1LE rotor from the DB1812 system off to the right. Praising the Laguna's elegant slant nose is Global West's Eric Norrdin.

The Global West Cat 5 kit was a no-go due to the severe drop center of the Bassett wheel. (Earlier, we had ruled out kits by other manufacturers as well.) That left just the Global West DB1812 system, which uses the stock-style single-piston caliper with a larger 12-inch 1LE Camaro rotor and a unique spindle to make it all fit together. We opted to reuse our original calipers to ease the installation and save a few bucks, but the DB1812 kit normally comes with new '70-73 Camaro binders and hoses.

When you need to make up a shortfall in brake torque due to a small caliper, you can often recoup much of this in superior friction materials. We had heard great things about the EBC Yellowstuff pads, and ordered a set to install. They'll have their work cut out for them when we hit the track.
