Complete 408 Stroker Engine Build - The Twister Part 3 - PHR Project Car
Windage Reduction Oil is life, so we went with this eight-quart pan from Milodon (PN 30926, $219.95). Ken Sink of Milodon says, "Increased oil capacity is an absolute requirement to handle the demands of higher rpm and increased horsepower. Our horizontal baffle subdues 100 percent of any unwanted oil movement, which results in consistent oil pressure and increased horsepower output. When using this windage tray, you can expect 12 to 16 more horsepower." The pan was installed using a crushproof gasket set from Milodon (PN 40350, $20.99) and more ARP fasteners from the accessory bolt kit. We could have knocked hundreds off the price by using a stock pan, but at the cost of reliability and performance. Again, we would rather spend now than fix it later. Power Contest Winners We asked the keyboard bench racers on several sites to take their best guess at our 408 Windsor's power before heading off to the dyno. The goal was to guess the peak horsepower and torque, add them together, and see who wins. We visited Pro-Touring.com, Lateral-g.net, and Stangnet.com forums, and offered a prize pack to the guy on each site with the closest guess. The actual number ended up being 1,082 (552+530), which produced a three-way tie between Ken Brown, Allan Grah, and Dave Beddome, on Pro-Touring.com. For their efforts, each will get an Ignytion calendar (www.ignytion.net), "Dukes" DVD, and some random swag we had lying around. We also gave the same prize to the top prognosticators at Stangnet.com (Matthew Guy), and Lateral-g.net (Jason Hoting). | WHERE THE MONEY WENT | | 408CI WINDSOR | | Part: | Source: | Part No.: | Price: | | 351W block, early | AA Midwest | block | $250 | | Eagle 408 stroker kit | Eagle | 16123030 | $1,279.95 | | Cam bearings | Summit/Clevite | CLE-SH510S | $17.95 | | Hydraulic roller camshaft | COMP | 35-426-8 | $255.95 | | Double roller timing set | COMP | 2135 | $48.99 | | Standard volume oil pump | Summit/Melling | MEL-M83 | $24.95 | | Oil pump pick-up | Milodon | 18365 | $39.95 | | Windage tray | Milodon | 32215 | $49.95 | | Eight quart oil pan | Milodon | 30926 | $219.95 | | Oil pan gasket set | Milodon | 40350 | $20.99 | | Dipstick for pan | Milodon | 22030 | $54.95 | | Expansion plug set | Milodon | 34035 | $12.99 | | Cam bolt | ARP | 254-1001 | $4.88 | | Oil pump bolts | ARP | 150-6901 | $7.99 | | Oil pump driveshaft | ARP | 154-7901 | $17.88 | | Main studs | Milodon | 81166 | $70.00 | | Hardened pushrods | COMP | 7643-16 | $120.39 | | Roller rockers | COMP | 1044-16 | $348.39 | | Vertical-bar roller lifters | COMP | 8931-16 | $462.88 | | Assembled 205 heads | AFR | 1450 | $1,897 | | Extra porting work on heads | AFR | NA | $260 | | Head gasket (2) | Summit/Fel-Pro | FPP-1011-1 | $71.90 | | Head studs | ARP | 154-4203 | $145.95 | | Spark plugs (8) | Auto Zone/Autolite | 3923 | $12 | | Hardware finishing kit | COMP | 235 | $28.69 | | Aluminum timing cover | Edelbrock | 4250 | $134.99 | | SFI Balancer - fluid type - 28 oz | PRW | 2530201 | $148.05 | | Balancer bolt | ARP | 150-2501 | $20.95 | | Aluminum water pump | Milodon | 16231 | $94.95 | | Single-plane intake manifold | Edelbrock | 2981 | $265.95 | | Stainless water neck | Performance Stainless | 1068 | $149.95 | | Distributor | Mallory | 4755401 | $249.95 | | Distributor hold-down | Summit/Mr. Gasket | MRG-9860 | $6.39 | | Plug wires - 8 mm | Mallory | 938 | $68.39 | | Carburetor - 950 cfm | Holley | 80496 | $709.95 | | Carb stud kit | ARP | 200-2401 | $13.95 | | Accessory bolt kit | ARP | 554-9503 | $119.95 | | Oil filter | AutoZone/Motorcraft | FL-1A | $3.95 | | Gasket kit | Summit/Fel-Pro | FEL-KS2309 | $59.95 | | Valve covers | Summit | FMS-M-6582-E302P | $102.95 | | Parts Total: | $7,874.79 | | Machine work: | | Balancing of rotating assembly | Eagle | $333 | | Block bore and hone | Outlaw Racing | $235 | | Deck resurface | Outlaw Racing | $140 | | Line hone block | Outlaw Racing | $175 | | Machine shop labor total: | $883 | | Parts and Labor Total: | $8,757.79 | ON THE DYNO 1.75-INCH LONG-TUBE HEADERS | | Performer RPM Air Gap Holley HP 750 | | RPM | TQ | HP | | 3,000 | 461.3 | 263.5 | | 3,100 | 465.4 | 274.7 | | 3,200 | 472.0 | 287.6 | | 3,300 | 478.6 | 300.7 | | 3,400 | 487.4 | 315.5 | | 3,500 | 497.0 | 331.2 | | 3,600 | 505.4 | 346.4 | | 3,700 | 512.0 | 360.7 | | 3,800 | 517.1 | 374.1 | | 3,900 | 520.4 | 386.4 | | 4,000 | 522.7 | 398.1 | | 4,100 | 524.7 | 409.6 | | 4,200 | 526.3 | 420.9 | | 4,300 | 526.5 | 431.1 | | 4,400 | 525.2 | 440.0 | | 4,500 | 522.5 | 447.7 | | 4,600 | 519.8 | 455.3 | | 4,700 | 517.1 | 462.8 | | 4,800 | 515.3 | 470.9 | | 4,900 | 513.6 | 479.1 | | 5,000 | 512.1 | 487.5 | | 5,100 | 510.2 | 495.4 | | 5,200 | 507.4 | 502.4 | | 5,300 | 503.7 | 508.3 | | 5,400 | 499.2 | 513.3 | | 5,500 | 494.2 | 517.5 | | 5,600 | 488.8 | 521.2 | | 5,700 | 483.7 | 524.9 | | 5,800 | 477.4 | 527.2 | | 5,900 | 469.8 | 527.7 | | 6,000 | 460.8 | 526.5 | | 6,100 | 451.9 | 524.9 | | 6,200 | 441.8 | 521.6 | | Victor Jr. Holley HP 950 | | RPM | TQ | HP | | 3,000 | 439.4 | 251.0 | | 3,100 | 444.0 | 262.1 | | 3,200 | 452.7 | 275.8 | | 3,300 | 460.9 | 289.6 | | 3,400 | 467.3 | 302.5 | | 3,500 | 472.9 | 315.2 | | 3,600 | 480.7 | 329.5 | | 3,700 | 489.3 | 344.7 | | 3,800 | 497.0 | 359.6 | | 3,900 | 504.3 | 374.5 | | 4,000 | 510.3 | 388.6 | | 4,100 | 513.8 | 401.1 | | 4,200 | 516.5 | 413.0 | | 4,300 | 519.3 | 425.2 | | 4,400 | 521.8 | 437.2 | | 4,500 | 523.8 | 448.8 | | 4,600 | 525.5 | 460.3 | | 4,700 | 527.0 | 471.6 | | 4,800 | 528.6 | 483.1 | | 4,900 | 529.8 | 494.3 | | 5,000 | 529.5 | 504.1 | | 5,100 | 527.6 | 512.3 | | 5,200 | 524.8 | 519.6 | | 5,300 | 521.8 | 526.5 | | 5,400 | 518.2 | 532.8 | | 5,500 | 514.1 | 538.4 | | 5,600 | 509.2 | 542.9 | | 5,700 | 503.9 | 546.9 | | 5,800 | 497.6 | 549.5 | | 5,900 | 491.1 | 551.6 | | 6,000 | 482.2 | 550.9 | | 6,100 | 473.5 | 549.9 | | 6,200 | 465.4 | 549.4 |
