Here's what the bare cast-iron heads look like without Dupli-Color aluminum engine paint.

Minus the Hooker headers, we built this 350 small-block Chevy for $3,075 using a fair amount of new parts in the process. The key to obtaining the strong 470hp power peak at this price point was the super-efficient EQ 23-degree cylinder head.

Enginequest's new EQ 23 head is only available from the manufacturer as a bare casting ($478 per pair), but we found Shaver Specialties (www.shaverengines.com, 310-370-6941) offers assembled EQ heads starting at $860 per pair.

Here's what our AA Midwest-sourced $300 short-block looked like when we received it. The first task was to drain it of remaining fluids and give it a pressure wash.

This is a sectioned cut of the EQ 23 head, and the smooth cast finish is immediately apparent. The arrow indicates the critical area to be considered when designing a smaller volume high-performance chamber. Another point to note is the generous short-side radius.

After teardown, the block was given a comprehensive clean with oven cleaner and wire brushes. Here is how it looked prior to going to the machine shop.

For good exhaust flow and a compact combustion chamber, the indicated area is important. The shape of the EQ 23 50cc chamber is close to optimal.

When the block came back from boring and honing, all the threads were chased with a tap. More Gunk, and a high-pressure hose, ensured all oil galleys were clean. Then it was time to mask prior to painting.

The stock powdered-metal rods in this engine are the best production rods for the small-block. These were paired with a KB 142 hypereutectic dished piston that delivered a compression ratio of 10.35:1.
