For an $8,100 car, the Fairlane isn't shabby. Our first thought was to stuff in a 460, but we decided to go with a stroked 351W, which makes better sense since it is more widely supported by the aftermarket. Every project car needs a catch name, so we picked Project Fastlane 500.

The aluminum housing for the control button is slick. It is curved to line up with a shift handle, but didn't fit around our tapered column shifter very snugly. We fixed this with a small piece of double-sided tape, and then we secured the assembly with the included zip ties.

Now it's time to get busy under the hood. The first step is to find a good place for the solenoid. We wanted a spot away from heat, and near the master cylinder, proportioning valve, or distribution block. In our case, the back of the shock tower was a nice out-of-the-way location. We lined it up, made some marks, and drilled two holes.
