Back On Track, We knock down a few more of our performance goals at the track with a new set of Nitto R-compound DOT tires-but we had to get them on first!

Last month we plugged in our stroker 383 smog motor from Speed-O-Motive and our TCI manual-valve Turbo 350. We spent most of our efforts deciphering ancient smog diagrams in anticipation of the state-mandated visual inspection and tailpipe test. The 383 dyno'd to 403 hp (at 5,300 rpm) using unfettered dyno headers and no catalytic converter.

The key to hitting our target grip numbers in the slalom, skidpad, and braking test is good rubber. When we realized we were a long way off with our Falken street-compound tires, we knew it was time for something more radical, namely some Nitto NT-555RII Road Race Extreme skins. We've used 'em before, and they work like a charm on track and on the street.

Another factor influencing our choice of rubber was the fact that we mangled one of our Weld front rims on a pothole in Torrence, CA. Weld has discontinued ProStar XP, so it was time to drop back and punt.

Our new wheel/tire combo now consists of Nitto 275/40ZR17 NT-555RII Extreme Road Race tires on American Racing Rebel 17x9-inch cast wheels. They have a 6-inch backspacing and just barely fit on our '76 Camaro after using 7/32-inch spacers on the front.

Even we were surprised when the old Weld/Falken wheel/tire combo worked with a Hotchkis lowering spring--cut an extra 1.5 coils. Nevertheless, our luck ran out with the ARE/Nitto combo. Here you can see how the tire is resting hard against the inner fenderwell. The stance looked wicked, but the requirement was for the car to be able to actually roll.

The reason for the tire/fender interference is obvious here. The 275/40R17 Nitto is a good bit wider and taller than the 255/35ZR18 Falken (right). Nothing a new set of Hotchkis springs can't handle.

In this photo you can see Primedia tech center manager Jason Scudellari chopping our original Hotchkis springs by 1.5 coils. We got another pair for our new combo and chopped them a half coil just so they'd fit the A-arms without a spring compressor. The gamble paid off and the new wheels fit without any interference.

Here you can see the effect the new wheel/tire combo has on stance. We much prefer the looks of the original Weld/Falken combo over the ARE/Nitto combo. Note the space between the top of the rims and the bottom of the fender lips in each...

...That's the primary visual cue that sets a great stance apart from the not-so-great. It's bitchin' when that cool stance aids performance, but when it gets in the way of generating g's, we have to side with performance--as we did here.

In the cockpit we knew the crappy original driver's seat wasn't going to cut it with our new-found grip, so we ordered a much more supportive chair from Jeg's. Before it, we were hanging on to the steering wheel for dear life, even with less-grippy tires.

The Jeg's GS-1 sport seat isn't designed to steal business away from Recaro, but it's supportive, attractive, and at $199.99, is reasonably priced, too. We also bought the universal pedestal mount for $21.99 and built our own mounting frame with $26 worth of flat-steel stock.

We cajoled "Installation Jason" Scudellari, a street-rod fabricator in another life, into building our seat bracket for us.
