1976 Chevy Camaro - Project g/28 Part 4
MSD distributors are tuned for a very conservative advance curve from the factory, but comes with the tuning springs and bushings to easily alter the advance curve's rate and amount. Jake quickened the curve with a spring change, and tuned the advance curve. | With the break-in complete, the engine was given a short pull to check the mixture. The stock No. 62 jets were too lean, so a jetting loop was next to zero-in on the ideal jetting. At the end of several tests, we ended up with No. 66 jets. Only the primary main circuit has replaceable jets on the 4160 carbs like this 600 Holley. | A feature we liked with the MSD distributor was the positive wire retention in the cap, all but eliminating the chance of a wire getting loose at the distributor. | With the fuel mixture tuned to perfection, we went through a timing loop to see where the ideal timing would be found. The engine responded with best power at 36 degrees. If large changes are made in timing, the fuel requirements will need to be looked at again, since different timing will often work better with different mixtures. | So how did this legally-constrained 383 do against the dyno? It had the oats to top the 400hp mark, with 403 hp showing at an easy 5,400 rpm. Torque was abundant right from the bottom of our test and worked up nicely to a peak of 450 lb.-ft. at 4,100 rpm. Interestingly, even though power peaked at 5,400, the engine was down only 11 hp at 5,800, and was still making useable power at 6,000. It's nice to know that hot rodding power is there, without having to sweat retribution from "the man." | We've got some interesting side stories coming up for Project g/28, including the installation of some really cool, really affordable seats from Jeg's. They aren't a 100-percent bolt-on, but we'll show you how to make it all fit at a price you can swing. We're also working on getting those Nitto R-compound tires on some 17-inch rims, and a quick-ratio steering box from Flaming River. |
