1976 Chevrolet Camaro - Project g/28
Brakes? We don't need no stinking... Brakes? We don't need no stinking brakes! Our Stalker radar gear measured the stopping distance from 60 mph at 216.9 feet. We noted lock-up of the right rear wheel, which is common on cars without ABS. | On the 200-ft. skidpad, it... On the 200-ft. skidpad, it was a real chore to keep from grinding the trim rims into the pavement. The small tire contact patch put the Camaro in a state of chronic understeer, and the lack of power kept it there. Clockwise rotation yielded a lateral limit of .71g while counter-clockwise produced a .69 reading. Averaged, the limit was .70g, or about the same as a 1995 Mazda MPV minivan. | This is ultimately where we're... This is ultimately where we're trying to go with this thing. If you're really serious about your project car, it's best to have a professional artist help you at the conceptual stage. That's the only way to stay on track and keep your project from ending up like a runner-up in a Batmobile design contest. We contacted computer artist Kris Horton to work this up for us, but we're not tackling the body and paint within the scope of this project. This will come later after we've proven our performance within our budget goals. | We may not stay with the metallic... We may not stay with the metallic red paint, but we really dig the three-piece spoiler, the twin silver stripes and the Weld Pro Star XP wheels. A two-inch cowl hood will most likely be a requirement for the higher intake manifold, carb and air cleaner (previous picture). One option we're mulling over is anthracite trim for the wheel centers, stripes and bumpers. Stance is everything! Pick you wheels and tires first, making sure they fill the wheel wells, then get the body down on those wheels. It will reward you in the end to build the car around the look you conceptualized up front. | We've already ordered up a... We've already ordered up a complete Performance Suspension Technology suspension system and Global West upper control arms. In part 2, we'll bolt these on, then go back to the track for some more testing. Without blowing the details, these parts made a huge difference in the way the car handles and looks! We're well on our way to achieving our goal... | After baseline testing, we... After baseline testing, we ordered our rims from Weld and drove the jalopy over to Falken Tire in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The folks there helped us with tire fitment--where we discovered some unusual clearance problems unique to second-generation F-bodies. Things got interesting, but we got all our problems solved with a little ingenuity and some old-fashioned grunt. We're going to come back with part 2 in the May issue with the installation and follow-up testing, so stay tuned for all the details! | Here's a peak at a Falken... Here's a peak at a Falken FK-451 tire mounted on a Weld Pro Star XP wheel. Wheel and tire fitment on second-generation Camaros is a tricky thing, but it's a lot easier to get a big tire into a '70 - '81 than a '67 - '69. We're going to take full advantage of that--without resorting to mini-tubs! | | |
nastyz28.com If you're a second-generation Camaro lover and you're looking for the ultimate place to hang out on the internet, look no further than www.nastyz28.com. The guys who run this site are hardcore; if you're looking to decode a VIN, identify a car for sale or need help with a technical issue, this is the place. We've been to hundreds of make-specific websites, and we've never seen any that had this much information. All years of second-gen Camaros are fair game at nastyz28. Generally, second gens fall into three categories, the first version ('70-'73), the second version ('74-'77) and the third version ('78 -'81). Each year has its own information page with VIN decoding, color charts, dealer brochures, RPOs, year-to-year changes, production numbers, and a spotter's guide. There are plenty of photos, and there's even a massive file of wiring diagrams and exploded views which can help with repairs or reassembly. If that fails, there's an active message board staffed 'round-the-clock by Camaro brainiacs.
