Jack Burns - The Sultan of Stainless
The great thing about upgrading your exhaust system is how it can be accomplished in stages. If you choose to work with Burns or any other top-notch exhaust engineer, you can develop a game plan for maximizing the performance of your exhaust system by addressing the areas where the most power may be hiding. As we've mentioned already, the header collector is a prime location for finding lost power, as is the area just aft of the collector and into the X-pipe. Improving the system under your car should start here. The materials Burns has chosen to work with are 304 and 321 stainless steel tubing. Some customers require titanium, and Burns has worked his magic on pipes crafted from this as well. For turbocharged engines and other high heat applications, Burns also offers headers and pipe sections made from Inconel, but prices are understandably steep. Material choices (like design choices) are based upon the application, but Burns doesn't work with anything less than stainless steel. The high heat capacity and durability of stainless are two good reasons. The outstanding appearance of a fully-polished set of stainless headers should count for some extra points, but since there's no horsepower gains with polish, we'll leave it out. If you're a hardcore show fiend, this may matter more to you. View Related Article
