Steve Roth, fabricator and driver, has it in his garage and fabricating as we speak. However, we have to regretfully move back it's debut at SEMA because of the amount of work that we have left and also some small hurdles we encountered. When we received the car back to our shop, we realized that there was more work that needed to be done than originally planned and could not accomplish it in only 3 weeks. We also have not been able to mount the ProCharger with a SuperCharger Store brackets that will clear the frame. This is pivotal in mounting the radiator, inner cooler, and many others items in the engine compartment. After talking to several companies involved, we all agreed that we could not slap together a semi-completed project and send it to SEMA. There is so much excitement and expectations on this build that we did not want to jeopardize its momentum. We will be working diligently on getting the rest of the parts from the last few companies and then completing the fabrication as soon as possible. The good news is that Gear Vendors has already booked "Project Sick Seconds" for next years SEMA show. So it will be on display with them next year!

Gear Vendors booth will now be filled with Jay Leno's Bentley Speed Six and also Dave Ahokus's Drag Week 1941 Willy's that ran 7 second ET's with a 700 inch Sonny motor. Check them out at this years show. (See attached pictures)

We will keep you updated on "Project Sick Seconds" and will also need pictures of everyone's parts being manufactured for the BuildBook. www.buildbookusa.com

Denny Terzich
ProRides
www.goprorides.com

The NT05R is Nitto’s most aggressive drag radial designed for competition use. The NT05R will be available for purchase in the first quarter of 2010.

Nitto’s top priority during the development of the tire was to maximize traction. To achieve this, Nitto engineered an all-new specialized race compound and a large contact patch. The dual-purpose sidewall construction is enhanced for traction during launch as well as straight-line stability at the top-end. This improves consistency and controllability throughout the entire pass.

The NT05 will be available in popular 17- to 20-inch rim diameters designed for high-performance drag racing vehicles. Included in the size lineup is a P345/30R19, which is the world’s first 19-inch drag radial. Sizes will be released throughout 2010.

Source:
www.nittotire.com

www.nittotire.com

While I was visiting Steve on my trip to the Goodguys PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, Steve happened to mention he had a bunch of parts for Lagunas. He collects not only whole cars, but parts, and Laguna memorabilia from the ‘70s. When it was time to fix up the interior of our ’75 Laguna project, I remembered that Steve had some parts cars lying around, and called him. We needed a dash pad to send to Just Dashes for restoration, and I hadn’t been able to find one on eBay.

Steve mentioned he knew where one was, and offered to go out and get it for me. I gladly accepted Steve’s generous offer, and now it’s sitting at Just Dashes, awaiting a complete restoration. Steve frequently has Laguna pieces for sale on eBay, and I can vouch for his sizable collection of stuff. Besides the dash and dash pad, I also got a shifter bezel for the console, a shift knob retaining circlip, a visor hinge, and some small, but very important odds and ends. Besides Steve’s help, Dr. Larry Belcher of Deland, FL has also helped out with some important stuff, like an ashtray, an instrument panel bezel, and a glove box door.

When you’re dealing with a rare car and hard-to-find parts, it helps to get hooked into the network. In our case, it’s for Laguna stuff, but every oddball car has a hardcore fan base. I’ve found that it really pays to work with those connections. In the past, I’ve toyed around with the idea of doing a Nova, but never went that route seriously. This time, I got serious, and looked at about a dozen cars in person, and several hundred on line at places like Craig’s List, eBay, The Pomona Swap Meets classifieds, www.novas.net, www.recycler.com, and www.stevesnovasite.com. I settled on the ’68-72 body style for a couple of reasons. The ’62-65 body-style is the most compact and lightweight. It’s also surprisingly affordable given its age. You can find a lot of good values out there and parts are plentiful. Nevertheless, that body style (first gen), particularly the front end, is an acquired taste, so I passed on that. The second-gen ’66-67 Hardtop coupe is (to me at least) the most seductive of the Nova body styles. Apparently, plenty of people agree, because the cost of a ’66-67 Hardtop is through the roof—no pun intended. The price of these cars kept me out of the game. The third-gen Nova (’68-74) is also very attractive, particularly the ’68-72 small-bumper cars. They’re also still relatively affordable, so that was the focus of my search.

After looking for a few months, I ran across this refrigerator white ’68, owned by Nathan Atchison of Hemet, CA. Nathan's Craig’s List ad claimed zero rust (which when examined was close enough to the truth for me). No rust was important over anything else, because you’ll pay a lot more down the road with time, money, and anguish. The ’68 also had a slightly breathed on 350 V-8, another plus. It also came with a serviceable set of headers, a dual Flowmaster exhaust, and a non-stock Turbo 400 trans. Nathan clearly enjoyed the car; he had taken good care of it, and would be sad to see it go. On the down side, there is no interior in it—, not even a dash pad, just the front and rear bench seat. I have to say that no interior turned out to be somewhat beneficial, because I was able to inspect the door skins and quarter panels from the interior using a flashlight. In spite of being relatively rust free, there were still a significant number of dings and dents, and the paint quality was barely above primer grade. Still, we should be able to shoot this thing for two or three grand, and have it come out really nice.

Nathan was asking $6k, which seemed on the high side for a stripped-down car. Still, nothing I’d been looking at for that price was as rust free, so I bargained the seller down to $5k. The deal was struck, and I drove it the 35 miles home last night in the dark. I found out that it has a wonderful sound through the Flowmasters—which I think are worth keeping. The power drum brakes aren’t so great. When stomped on, the car pulls hard to the right. In a panic stop, this thing is going to barrel roll for sure. No more serious highway use until that gets fixed with some competent discs.

Check back later, and see what I’m thinking about doing with it!

For the last month, we’ve been actively searching for a ’68-72 Nova project for a budget build-up. The idea is to drop the Dart SHP 400 we just built into it, along with a 200-4R automatic overdrive, then go hunt some import tin on the street. I figured we could pick up a rust-free California car for between $3k and $5k, do a scuff and shoot paint job for a couple of grand, and put in some new carpet and seat covers.

I know there aren’t any creampuff grandma cars out there for that price—I’ve budgeted for paint, upholstery, and replacing any beat-up trim—but thought I’d be able to find something useable. Unfortunately, every dude with a rusted-out six-banger thinks he’s got gold on his hands. I’m looking at Novas that are absolutely gutted or complete rotted out, for $8k. The one shown in the photo was at the Pomona swap meet with a sign for $8,800! That’s absolutely nuts.

I’d really like to do something mainstream like a Nova so that you readers get the most out of it. Nevertheless, I’m finding some real good oddball stuff for much less cash, like the restored ’69 Buick Skylark I found with new paint, new interior, and low miles for just $7k. The ’73-75 Novas are also very affordable, as are Buick, Pontiac and Olds A-bodies (check out Robert McGaffin’s $7,500 Olds Cutlass F-85 for example).

If you know of a cool Nova for sale, drop me a note at john.hunkins@sorc.com. Our budget is limited to around $5k.

GMCI is getting on the bandwagon too, and plans to roll out a Yenko variant in Las Vegas at the SEMA show next week. We got this press release from GMCI’s PR agency, and we’ll let it do the talking:

“General Marketing Capital Incorporated (GMCI) announced today that it will present its official 2010 Yenko Camaro Prototype to the public in the OER booth (# 23795) at the 46th annual SEMA Trade Show in Las Vegas, November 3-6.

“The official 2010 Yenko Prototype began its life on a 2010 Camaro SS platform. The vehicle then underwent several significant upgrades including modification to a “Phase I” Yenko Camaro Supercar. Preliminary highlights and specifications of this powerful vehicle include a high performance 600hp supercharged and intercooled LS-based engine, Tremec six speed manual high performance transmission, Hurst short throw shifter, 6-piston big brake package and Magnaflow high-flow cat-back exhaust system.

“Plans call for three Phases to be available to take the fifth Generation Camaro from ordinary to extraordinary. This Phase I Prototype from GMCI maintains the unique retro appeal Yenko enthusiasts are so passionate about, while including significant performance upgrades to the stock GM specifications and keeping the car affordable. Phase II and III cars will have higher output engines and even more suspension and handling upgrades.

“Additional Yenko branded upgrades to this prototype vehicle include the Yenko stripe package, official emblems and badging, retro-styled 22-inch Yenko billet aluminum wheels, Yenko leather interior package featuring Yenko Super Car (sYc) embroidered headrests, Yenko/SC sill plates, Yenko/SC embroidered floor mats and more.

“Nearly 45 years ago, racing legend Don Yenko embarked on a mission to build a race car that could effectively compete in the 1966 SCCA racing season. His inspiration resulted in the development of the Yenko Stinger, an SCCA race car based on the Corvair Corsa platform. It was in the last quarter of 1965 that Yenko’s plans for that vehicle came together changing automotive history forever.

Originally, the ‘60s era Yenko car was a special order vehicle, designed and built by Don Yenko Chevrolet in Canonsburg, PA. Don Yenko used the Central Office Production Order (COPO) program, a program GM used for fleet vehicles like police cars, taxi cabs, etc. to special order the vehicles and then modify them into some of the most powerful vehicles available. Today, an original Yenko is one of the most sought after Camaros in the world.”

Any current or prior competitor can attest to the amount of preparation that takes place, whether that’s for rules clarification, venue logistics, sponsor involvement, or manpower. We can come up with wonderful ideas for contests all day long, but without key people to implement them, we’d be dead in the water. To that point, there’s one person who I’d like to thank for making the EMC become a reality: our publisher, Ed Zinke. He’s not on the editorial staff, but he’s just as passionate for the Engine Masters Challenge as any of us. Ed really “gets it,” and because of that, you benefit.

Besides Ed Zinke, there are some other notable folks, without whom none of this could’ve happened. My sincerest thanks go out to the wonderful people at the University of Northwestern Ohio, whose venue we use for the event. UNOH has a top-notch facility in Lima, Ohio, with some incredibly hard-working instructors and students. While there’s plenty of thanks that need to go all around to the UNOH students and faculty, I particularly would like to thank Paul Higgins and Randy Lucius of UNOH for making this event not only successful, but fun, too. If you are a young person considering a career in high performance or motorsports, UNOH is like a dream come true. (How many universities do you know of with a skidpad and a dragstrip launching pad in the parking lot? Can you imagine doing that in your school’s parking lot and getting extra credit instead of detention?)

Another person who I can’t say enough good things about is EMC Director of Competition, Wesley Roberson. As a long-time NHRA tech inspector, many of our competitors have known Wes for years. In the months leading up to the EMC, Wes devotes many hours answering the technical questions of our competitors. During the event, Wes keeps things running smoothly and metes out judgment calmly and equitably. Unfortunately for Wes, when he’s doing his job really well, it means you don’t hear about it in print or on the message boards. Once again, while the magazine staff makes many of the over-arching decisions about the structure and intent of the competition, it is Wes who largely turns those loose ideas into hard and fast rules that can be enforced. Lastly, it is Wes who orchestrates the teardown and post-event inspection of the competition engines. His NHRA experience has proven invaluable in this regard; his reputation of having a super sharp eye in the NHRA tech area keeps many competitors on the straight and narrow. Without Wes, this thing called Engine Masters doesn’t happen.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to the rest of the gang. Big props go out to Steve Dulcich, Robert McGaffin, Jenny Schmitz, Erica Presley, Yasmin Fajatin, Jake Hairston, and Michelle Turczyn for all their hard work before and during the Engine Masters Challenge too.

The week of Engine Masters is a whirlwind of activity. Stuff happens so quickly and in different places, I sometimes wonder if I’m capturing everything. It’s the ultimate target-rich environment for a gearhead, sort of like being a kid in some insane toy store. The best part about it is that the hard, passionate work of all these people—before, during, and after the competition—means that I have the freedom to move around in it easily, grabbing stories; talking with competitors, sponsors, vendors; and bringing you the best hardcore engine edit in the business. Thanks guys!

Opening in 2010, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is set to become the world’s largest indoor theme park. Externally the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi expresses the language, values and passion of the Ferrari brand itself. Benoy’s vision - to create a building that reflects Ferrari’s sinuous form, is directly inspired by the classic double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT chassis.

The double curve was proportionately applied in elevation to set the structure’s length and height. This proportion gave rise to the dynamic scale of the building at 700metres from tip to tip of the tri-forms.

The metal skin roof is highly insulated and the main façades utilise efficient glass to reduce thermal loads and glare. The spectacular roof forms a feature of the building providing a fifth elevation and serves as the backdrop to a huge Ferrari logo, that will welcome all passengers flying into Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Internally, a collection of over 20 high octane attractions provide excitement for the whole family. The focal attraction will be the 60metre high ‘G-Force Tower’ – one of the most intense ‘freefall’ experiences in the world. Its combination of massive power, light weight and impressive fuel economy set new precedents for performance engines—and continues to do so generation after generation. The latest version, the LS9, makes some 638 hp from just 6.2 liters, far eclipsing even the mightiest big-blocks from the muscle car era—while meeting modern standards for emissions and fuel economy. It's no wonder, then, that the LS engines have become some of the most popular for high-performance applications. For those who want to build or modify their LS engine, this book provides the most detailed and extensive instructions ever offered. Whatever your performance goals might be, How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines shows you what modifications are needed and how to make them. Premier LS engine technician Joseph Potak addresses every question that might come up, covering topics including crankshafts and piston assemblies, cylinder heads, camshafts, valvetrain, block modifications, intake manifolds, fuel system, header selection, and setting up ring and bearing clearances for particular uses. In short, this book is the ultimate resource for building the ultimate LS engine.

Format: Softbound

Pages: 176
Length: 8.25 x 10.625
Catalog ID: 145825

Price: $24.99

Source:
Motorbooks
www.Motorbooks.com

I finally got the bulk of it done, thanks to Heath Elmer and Keith Kanak at Heath Elmer Restorations in Gilbert, AZ. We tackled the carpet (OPG), Procar seats (Scat), rear upholstery (OPG), weatherstrippping (Soffseal), and trim paint (Dupli-Color) in two days. When we were done, it was like a totally new car. Since then, I’ve added a billet steering wheel I found at a swap meet for $50, a Stewart Warner Performance tach, and a three gauge pack from Summit.

The only thing that’s still glaring is the dash and instrument panel. I found another dash in Ohio, thanks to Steve Yoder, our December 2009 cover car owner. I plan on having it refurbished at Just Dashes here in California. I may even have them do the gauges. Beyond that, there are some smaller things, like a missing glove box lid, a loose shifter knob, a broken ashtray handle, and a cracked shifter bezel. Some of the panels under the dash are broken at the screw holes, and I’ve already ‘glassed up some of those cracks good as new.

Look for the interior story in the February issue, and a follow on story a few months after that detailing the intricate and cool process Just Dashes uses to rejuvenate the dash pad.

These three new sizes join the existing line of 12, 18 and 24mm, and make a great addition to any home or pro shop that sees electrical wiring.

Shrink tubes have long offered an excellent way to insulate and protect electrical connections from dust, solvents, and other foreign material as well as providing strain relief. Other uses include wire insulating, connections, and terminals, and DEI heat shrink tubing also meets the material and functional properties of MIL Spec DTL-23053/5C.

Hi-Temp Shrink Tubes’ 3:1 shrink ratio remains flexible after shrinking, and due to its thick wall construction is capable of withstanding temperature ranges of -67°F (-55°C) to 275°F (135°C) with a maximum operating temperature of 394°F (201°C) during short durations of 30 to 60 minutes. Hi-Temp Shrink Tubes are easy to install by applying 120° F to 180°F of heat, and once formed, make a water-tight seal. Got one?" alt="1969 Nova" />

We’re looking for our next project car, a budget-oriented ’68-72 Nova street machine.

Ever since I sold project g/28, I’ve been on the prowl for another project. Initially, it will serve as a test bed for a 523-hp Dart 400 SHP small-block that we just finished for the magazine. (You may have seen the story on the short-block in the December issue.) After thinking about the options for this, and discussing it with folks around the office, I’ve decided to go hunting for a ’68-72 Nova. These are lightweight, relatively good looking, and they’re a lot less expensive than a ’67-69 Camaro.

I hit the Pomona swap meet last weekend to do some trolling. I found one or two possibilities, but nothing that struck me as just right. Ideally, I’d like a black car with straight sheet metal and good paint, but I’d consider other colors. For the interior (black vinyl), a bench seat/column shift is mandatory for that grannied-out look. I’ve been seeing a lot of cars with floor-shifter conversions, and those plastic-box $99 shifters don’t look like they’ll last two minutes, so that’s out.

For wheels, I want silver-painted 15-inch Ralleys with chrome trim rings. (Fat drag radials out back, natch.) Maybe some Flowmasters with turndowns in front of the rear axle too. I’ll probably do the leaf spring/shock relocation trick to fit the max meat possible without mini-tubbing.

For a trans, I’d really like to do a 2004-R overdrive. Basically, it’s the same case size as the Turbo 350 that many Novas came with, only it’s got an overdrive. The 2004-R can be built to handle a ton of power, and in a light car like the Nova, it should last forever. Behind the Dart 400, such a Nova could go low 11s in the quarter without much drama.

Nevertheless, I’ve got to find a Nova first. Then I’ve got to name it. If you have any ideas for the as-yet unobtained Nova, if you’ve got a lead on one, or if you have a cool name, post it up here, or email me at john.hunkins@sorc.com.

We're not holding our breath for the 2011 Camaro Z/28.

GM’s been changing CEOs like underwear, and this month we hear from several news sources that the fabled Z/28 is back on again, at least until the next Obama-installed CEO. This is one of those deals where we’ve been bitten so many times that we won’t believe it until we see it. Nevertheless, GM design chief Ed Welburn confirmed to Motor Trend editors during the Frankfurt Auto Show that the Z/28 program was back on track for a 2011 release. Whether it will have the supercharged, intercooled 6.2-liter V-8 from the CTS-V or something more watered down is still up for debate. Either way, we’re sure it will be priced well north of what mint-condition two-year-old Z06 Corvettes are going for right now.

Let me tell you, that was not a clean job. After all was said and done, I wanted to clean up the the pan as if it were new so I grabbed some Summit Brand Multi Pourpose Cleaner and Degreaser and sprayed the underside of the transmission.

It was the best smelling cleaner I had ever smelt! It smelt like a mix between race gas and bananas. The rags I used to wipe it down were in the trashcan in my garage and every time I went in there, I was greated with the great scent!

So in addition to cleaning well, it smells great, something that can't be said for most cleaners.

See it on Summit Racing's website $5.95 a can
