In November 2013, after the week-long SEMA auto show in Las Vegas, Nevada, three editors from three respectable magazines met-up for a completely different event: A drag race between all-American muscle, Bavarian brute and a bare-bones buggy.

Each editor came fully-equipped for the task at hand; packing enough heat for a Wild West showdown on the tarmac.

  • The place: The El Toro, California, Marine base

  • The cars: 1970 Harbinger Mustang, 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo, and LS3-powered Ultra Four buggy

Michael Finnegan from HOT ROD magazine was in the 1970 Harbinger Mustang (with a 1969 front clip) built by Agent 47. The car packs 420hp from a Boss 302 crate engine that breathes through a custom airbox with K&N filters and a set of long tube headers. The majority of the car, including the body panels were made using 3-D printers, which creates custom parts using carbon fiber to make the car extremely lightweight (approximately 3,000 lbs.)

Greg Emmerson from European Car magazine was in the 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo modified by BBI Autosport. The Porsche has all-wheel-drive (AWD), approximately 600 hp, and a 3.6L engine outback.

Fred Williams from Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine was in a LS3-powered Ultra Four buggy from Bomber Fabrication. The buggy’s frame was built using 100% chromoly tubing and tig-welded for strength. The off-road vehicle also includes Currie axles front and rear with King shocks at all four corners.

Who was the winner? You’ll have to watch to find out.
