Just in time for the release of the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang, we’ve made sure to showcase this awesome video of Justin Bell learning to drift in Vaughn Gittin, Jr.’s in the 2013 Monster Energy Nitto Tire Ford Racing Mustang RTR. Bell is a well-known British racecar driver turned automotive journalist and hosts “World’s Fastest Car Show” on the Motor Trend Network on YouTube, which airs every Friday. Vaughn Gittin, Jr. is an American, self-taught professional drifter from Maryland who is the creator of the Mustang RTR (his version of the Mustang that is available at Ford dealers world-wide.)
We begin with Bell visiting the final round of the 2013 Formula Drift Championship at the Irwindale Event Center in Irwindale, California. He’s given an all-access pass to watch and observe the races before being given a ride in Gittin Jr.’s Formula Drift Ford Mustang competition car. When Bell hops in the 2013 Mustang (S197 platform) for a ride, it’s easy to notice his immediate discomfort. Coming from a background in a much different style of racing, drifting is not something Bell has ever learned to do. He quickly adjusts as Gittin Jr. takes him around the track. By the end of the lap, he’s smitten and excited to give it a try himself.
The video then takes us to Willow Springs; a track located 80 miles north of downtown Los Angeles in Rosamond, California. While at the track, Bell hops in Gittin, Jr.’s 2013 Monster Energy Nitto Tire Ford Racing Mustang RTR one more time with Jr. behind the wheel for a lesson on how to drift. When the lesson is finished, Bell hops in the driver’s seat and surprises Jr. with an impressive drift around the cones. A few more laps and Bell has the hang of it. It just goes to show you can teach an old dog a new trick!
