It should come as no surprise that when the National Insurance Crime Bureau released the newest vehicle theft records, there was a separate "Sporty" classification. According to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) report, among car models made from 2010 – 2012, the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, and Dodge Challenger were among the top 5 cars being swiped.
Among vehicle theft records dating between January 1, 2009, through December 31, 2012, 3,780 Sporty vehicles were reported stolen in the United States. There are three classes: premium, mid-sized, and compact. Of the mid-sized class, 3,271 thefts occurred (87% of the Sporty total). Leading the pack of mid-sized cars was the Chevrolet Camaro, taken from its owners 1,509 times. Next up were the Ford Mustang (980) and Dodge Challenger (782). Below is the full list of top-ten most commonly stolen Sporty vehicles.
To make things even more interesting, the NCIC report broke-down the top-five states with the most Sporty thefts. Leading the Union is California with 764, then Florida (443), Texas (381), Georgia (257), and Michigan (187). As for areas within those states, The Golden State takes the cake with the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, California, areas having 291 thefts. Next was the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Georgia, area (226); Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, Florida, area (208); New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania area (198); and Detroit-Warren-Livonia, Michigan area (179).
As with any theft story, we should reminder our readers to follow a few basic steps to keep your classic or collectable car safe from thieves. First, remember to always lock your car when you get out. Second, never leave your keys in your car unattended. Third, avoid having anything on the seats overnight; even the most unassuming item could look good for a desperate thief. Last, install an aftermarket alarm of tracking device if you’re going to park your car in a rough neighborhood often. We hate seeing these statistics about stolen muscle cars, it breaks our hearts.
