Last year's MCOTY winner was the '65 Mustang fastback of Detroit Speed & Engineering. Here is DSE's Kyle Tucker going for broke on the SCCA autocross at National Trail Raceway.
The search is on for competitors in the 2013
Popular Hot Rodding magazine Muscle Car Of The Year competition.
Have you got a well-rounded classic muscle car that can go head to head on a drag strip or autocross course with the best new muscle out of Detroit? Then the PHR Muscle Car Of The Year competition (MCOTY) may be for you. We are looking for around 20 cars to meet us for a exciting day of track testing this summer, and all you have to do is speak up to get an invitation. We will be selecting competitors this spring to invite to MCOTY (there is no cost), but first we need to know what you’ve got!
The MCOTY competition is comprised of three events: drag strip, speed/stop braking challenge, and autocross. The performance in all three categories is given equal weighting, and the best overall competitor is named Muscle Car Of The Year in the December 2013 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. In fact, you’ll be on the cover as the winner.
The MCOTY Speed/Stop challenge...
The MCOTY Speed/Stop challenge is like a drag race; stage the car and launch on the 'tree, but stop at the eighth-mile timers without going past the cone stop box.
We’re generally looking for ’55-81 model year domestic cars that have been completed in the last 12 months, but we’re also open to projects completed in prior years that have largely gone unnoticed in the media. The MCOTY competition is for cars that are built with an eye to overall performance, i.e. those that can turn and stop as well as go fast in a straight line. Having said that, we’re looking for cars from a variety of “schools,” from garage-built budget-minded street machines, to all-out street-legal track cars and award-winning show cars. MCOTY isn’t so much about crowning a king as it is exposing readers to a variety of interesting machines. Is yours interesting?!
MCOTY is a lot of fun—not only do you get to own the track with your machine all day, you’ll get to hang with other like-minded car builders, drivers, and manufacturers. We buy the lunch, and you get to be in one of the coolest issues of PHR we put out all year long. (There’s also a good chance we’ll want to do a full feature on your car completely aside from the MCOTY competition.) You may bring any set of street-legal tires (minimum treadwear rating of 200), and you may bring any driver you want. Besides passing a really basic drag-strip tech inspection, that’s it.
One third of the MCOTY competition...
One third of the MCOTY competition is how well cars to in the quarter mile drag race. Unlike last year, the drag portion will count as an equal third.
If you’re interested, and want more info on where and when the MCOTY will take place this summer, send us an email that includes one good photo of your car, model and year of your car, a basic spec list of your car’s mods, you daytime contact phone number, and your hometown. We’ll also want to know if and when your car has been featured in
PHR or any other magazine. Please send the email to
john.hunkins@sorc.com with the subject line “2013 MCOTY.”
We look forward to hearing from you!
