Regular PHR readers are no doubt familiar with the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) as the host of our annual engine-building competition, the AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge. The tremendous support of the student assistants and the university’s outstanding facilities are major factors in the continued success of the Challenge. UNOH, founded in 1920, is a private, not-for-profit institution that offers students a clear pathway to bring skills to the forefront. Of particular interest to us is the College of Technologies, which offers their accredited programs in Automotive Technologies, Diesel Technology, High Performance Motorsports, Alternate Fuels Technology, Agricultural Technology, and HVAC/R Technology.
The demand for instruction in these varied fields is evident from the growth of the College of Technologies to encompass six modern buildings, which contain more than 163,000 square feet of classroom and shop space, as well as student and faculty lounges to accommodate the increasing enrollment in the programs.

An engine’s main purpose is to extract the energy available from its fuel. Naturally, the quality of that fuel is going to have a major influence on how the engine is built, the selection of components, and ultimately, how much power it is going to make.
