1966 Chevelle SS
Rick Baumgart Swisher, IA
If you aren't jealous of Rick Baumgart's slick '66 Chevelle SS, then we're sure the amazing garage full of killer petromobilia will hook you. Rick's dad opened a Mobil station back in 1959, and that's when he fell in love with cars and collecting related service and fuel memorabilia. The Chevelle is a an original SS four-speed car now powered by a Motorheads 427 with Edelbrock heads and Air-Gap intake, roller cam, Demon carb, and Hooker headers. Behind that is a Richmond six-speed and a 9-inch Ford with 3.50 gears. Behind the 17- and 18-inch Billet Specialties wheels lurk Wilwood discs at all corners. When he found it in the desert of Arizona, the Chevelle was white, but debris on the freeway wrecked the paint about four years ago, so Rick decided to use the opportunity to reinvent it in Candy Blue. He wasn't afraid to get it right back on the road afterward, and so far Rick and his wife have racked up 38,000 miles on the freshened Chevelle. "I love every day that I get to drive it during the spring and summer," Rick told us, "and I can't stand looking at it in the garage during the winters here in Iowa!"
1967 Pontiac Firebird
Jerry Davis Adrian, MI
This '67 Firebird has been familiar to Jerry Davis for many years, but for most of that time it didn't look anything like this. Primed and unassembled, Jerry's uncle had it stored in his garage for about 25 years. Jerry was finally able to talk him into relinquishing the Firebird for a mere $1,500 after assuring him that he would restore it and get it back on the road. That was a pretty big promise for Jerry, since at the time he had zero experience in rebuilding muscle cars. Nevertheless, he wasn't afraid to dive in and learn by doing. Roughly a year later the Firebird is very close to being complete, and Jerry has done nearly all of the work himself including paint, engine, wiring, and interior. "Luckily we live in the age of YouTube," Jerry explained, "where I can see a how-to video on just about anything." It may have been his first, but Jerry says, it definitely will not be his last build. He says he can't wait to do another car because he'll improve on what he learns from this one and make the next one even better!
