"I had a simple plan to make a nice driver with two years and $10,000, but it was much worse than we thought," says Erik Gagnon, owner of this PPG Moss Green '71 Mustang. "My long-time friend, Leo Staller, wound up repairing or replacing both rear quarter panels, the rear valance, the floor pan, radiator support, and part of the front clip where the hinges are."

1971 Ford Boss Mustang Engine
In order to get 418 cubic inches out of a 351 Cleveland, it requires a 4.100-inch stroker crank and custom pistons--the ones in Gagnon's '71 coming from Ross. The 351 Cleveland Boss appeared in 1971 and had 4-bolt main caps, 4V-type quench chamber heads with pedestals machined to accept a Boss 302 valvetrain. With the Cleveland's 9.206-inch deck height and Gagnon's 2.05-inch crank throw, it leaves just 1.025-inch of compression height. That's about as short a piston as you'd want on a street car. Take a good look at this 418-inch Cleveland, because you won't see many of these around.
