We brought g/28 to Westech for a little chassis dyno workout to begin our modification plan. Before the fun began, we carefully tuned the old setup to give us legitimate baseline numbers. Adjustments got it to turn 285 hp. We lost some power since the last time it was tested.

We found the lost power with a plug change to a fresh set of Denso plugs. Now we were in line with previous numbers, making a stout 298 at the wheel.

Our plan was to swap the emissions-compliant Weiand Action +Plus 8000 intake and 600-cfm 4160 vacuum-secondary carb for some high-performance hardware, in this case a Weiand Stealth Air Strike intake (PN 8501) and 750-cfm Holley 4250 HP double-pumper carb (PN 0-82751). The street price on the combo figures under $600.

With Chevy small-blocks, the distributor has to come out to swap intakes. Do yourself a favor and mark the position of the housing relative the block, and the rotor relative the housing. That way the distributor can be stabbed in just where it was, saving time in getting the distributor back in. Just don't crank the engine.

It didn't take long to wrench off the relevant cap screws and hoist the old induction off. This setup worked pretty well, but with our future heavy-hitting plans, we just wanted more.

The Air Strike intake has divorced runners, which run cooler for a denser, more powerful charge. Plus there is no power-robbing exhaust crossover. We sealed the end rails with silicone, but in hind sight, the stock gaskets would have been better to seal the gap.

What can be more functional than a Holley 750 Double-Pumper? These things are made to make power on engines like our 383. Even though the baseline induction system had a spacer, we went without it initially with the new induction system.
