The Fastest Street Cars - True Street Challenge
During the drag competition, racers made three passes back-to-back without giving it a rest. After making a run, all cars bypassed the pits and queued up on the return road for the next one. These engines saw serious heat soak, yet none of them failed--a testament to their street-bred nature. | Tricia McNeil (Linden, Mich.) works for the horsepower wizards at Hardcore Racing in Flint, Mich. She's 25 and married, so don't even think about it. Hardcore specializes in building ultra high-horsepower LS-series engines. | The lines of the Third Gen Camaro are arguably the best of the breed, and Chad Wade's '89 IROC was set on kill to back up those good looks. A stroked 406 small-block with a TPIS Miniram was good for mid-10s on nitrous. | "This thing is king of the streets here in Columbus. It'll take all comers out on the street," Perry Stanley told PHR prior to competition. That's the kind of talk that, while perhaps true, will inevitably invoke the wrath of bad karma... | ...Subsequently, Stanley neglected to turn on his secondary fuel pump before staging, and the '68 Nova died without proving anything. | The G-body Malibu is a staple of street racers from coast to coast, and Barrett White's '78 'bu is a prime example. Although averaging 12s in the Columbus competition, the Louisville, Ky.-based Chevy has run a best of 11.44 on the merit of a 406 small-block, a built Turbo 350 and a 9-inch rear with 4.30 cogs. | Tony MacDonald's '68 Nova lifts the front wheels en route to a 9-second run. | Patrolman Tom Lucas of the Union Township police department was our escort during the 30-mile traffic loop. As you can see, Tom has zero tolerance for any funny business. | Title this photo, "Local Boy Makes Good." Mike Rehl lives a stone's throw away in Heath, Ohio, and drove his '72 Vega GT wagon to the track. With only 2,700 pounds to haul, the completely stock Vortec 350 truck motor has no problem moving the 4.10-geared sub-compact into the 12-second zone. | How big is MSD True Street? Met Life sent their blimp over. Is drag racing covered? | "My brother dragged me out here." That's how Kari Sands (Somerset, Ohio) put it as she posed with Scott Stites' '65 Mustang. We don't care--as long as you look good for the camera. | Winner David Furedy was anointed King of Ohio in a post-race ceremony. Furedy had no idea he had to play dress-up to get the $250 in prize money and the MSD certificate for his True Street Champion jacket. The good news is he can always get a job at Burger King. |
