Team 38, Revolutionary Performance opened the event as our first competitors. On the spot with all eyes upon their small block Ford, the engine started cleanly, and showed its stuff immediately in the warm-up pulls. Remarkably docile at idle, yet it had the oats to make 586 peak hp, and 575 peak torque. Team member Daryl White found the running conditions to be quite different from their local testing in TN, showing a lean condition through the middle of the rev range. Tuning with Holley Adjust-A-Jets helped, but the team didn't quite get the fuel in the range they wanted. Interestingly, the tuning was done by looking at the BSFC numbers, rather than the more common LAMDA used by most competitors. A final score of 978.3 is the number to beat after the first competitor successfully completed the required runs.

Team 35, Performance unlimited came out of the blocks with another strong-running small-block Ford. The team worked the fueling long into the tune-up period, and even though the power numbers looked good, Bob Lathrop was disappointed with the originally reported numbers, explaining the score was well down on what they expected, and further commenting that he didn't know where the power went. A review of the stats showed an anomaly in the calculation, and once corrected, Bob and the Performance Unlimited team were right in line with what the engine was expected to make, a strong 1027 composite score, putting the CHI head Ford in the top spot.

Team 40, TLI Racing brought a beautifully-detailed FE Ford Big Block, and something seemed amiss from the beginning. A clear "flubb" at idle turned to a distinct miss, which turned out to be a dead plug, with the ground-electrode strap smacked flat. Hopeful that a plug change would cure big Ford's ills, a rocker shaft failure put an end to what could have been a stout entry. The team was forced to retire with a DNF.

Team 27, Hinkle Performance Engines brought a combination that looked serious and dangerous to Mopar engine guys in the know. With a W-9 top-end reported to flow in the 370 cfm range, the soft-spoken team from Kentucky had the hardware to pose a serious threat. Unfortunately the engine never had a chance to prove its potential, with a fluke retainer failure leading to a DNF. Without a doubt, Buck Hinkle is grateful that it didn't drop the valve into the piston, which surely would have led to catastrophic engine failure. Actually, just the fact that it didn't is as lucky as it was baffling.

Team 37, RHP/PER/AD came to battle with yet another small-block Ford, sporting the popular CHI cylinder heads. This engine proved to be a serious piece, knocking out the strongest numbers displayed in our first day of competition. After the initial warm-up period, the team decided to forgo any tuning and let it fly in the qualifying pulls. The decision proved sound, with a sizzling 627 Lb-Ft of torque and 685 peak horsepower, easily claiming top spot. With a composite score of 1054.53, this engine ended the day with the top spot in hand. We have to wonder if there is even a little more left in this combination with some additional tuning tuning. I'm sure we'll find the answer to that question as the competition develops in the days to come.

Team 30, Caverly & Sons brought a solid Pontiac combination down from their headquarters in New Hampshire. While the Pontiac isn't the most common engine type for this form of competition, these guys are dedicated to Pontiac Mystique, and were no doubt encouraged by the showing of Pontiac in prior events. The engine definitely earned respect with strong peak numbers of 617 Lb-Ft of torque, and credible peak power at 650 hp. The team's tuning was limited to experimenting with spacers during the tune-up phase, creating speculation that there is more power to be found as the competition progresses. Interestingly, the engine seemed to make more power with each successive qualifying pull, posting a strong composite score of 1013.67.
