The Autoshop Racing Engines' 509-cid big-block Chevy put down numbers that were hard to believe and few expected: 851hp on ordinary 91-octane pump gas. The basic appearance of the engine belies the attention to detail hidden within.

At the front of the engine, we see a collection of top-notch aftermarket parts, but nothing that can be considered one-off or exotic. The Jesel belt drive allows the cam phasing to be fine-tuned for the best average power, while the Meziere water pump prevents a power loss from driving the cooling system mechanically. The TCI Rattler damper helps the lightweight crank live under the abuse.

Lennart found that there was power to be had in the air filter case. The domed profile is contoured to aid directing flow into the carb throat, and there was a definite improvement recorded, especially at above 5,000rpm.

Lennart equipped the big-block with an ignition system composed of all MSD components. In the Engine Masters event there is no room for error in the ignition and this system performed flawlessly.

One engine builder chose to run a puny 4150 carb in a sea of Dominators and King Demons, and it happened to be the builder that made the most outright power. Lennart attributed the great fuel distribution and ratio curve to the carb, a 1,000 HP Holley, modified by Taco. He related that after changing jets and air-bleeds and trying other tuning, the best setting turned out to be as it came from Taco.

Does this look like a plug that has survived more than a dozen 850hp dyno pulls? The ACCEL plugs looked practically new, thanks to excellent mixture control, a lack of detonation, and outstanding oil control.

The Brodix intake manifold is actually designed to run a 4500-series carb, and the spacer is actually an insert that adapts the smaller 4150 carb. The unconventional stepped transition where the spacer meets the runner roof is intentional. Lennart employs the step to dampen reversion pulses, in a manner somewhat akin to a sheer plate. Note the porting in the plenum and runners, credited for aiding distribution.

There was considerable attention paid to the size and shape of the runners of the matched race oval-port Brodix intake and heads. Notice the epoxy work to reduce a dead area on the upper long turn of the intake manifold runner leading to the head.

The cylinder head port saw the same attention to detail. The cross-sectional area was carefully sized throughout, and though these heads were not the highest flowing units Lennart tested, at about 380-cfm peak they made the most power. Lennart pointed out that on the flow bench they sounded dead smooth and quiet.

The chamber side reveals the small bowls under the valves. The sizing was intentional with the constraint of the test rpm range determining the shape. The large 2.300-inch intake valves work with a 90 percent throat under the seat, helping create a venturi. The valve seat angles are conventional.
