A step not to be skipped in a performance build-up is measuring actual bearing clearance. The most accurate way to do this is by installing the main bearing caps with the bearings in place, and measuring the bore with a dial bore gauge. Mic the crankshaft to get its' actual dimension, and the difference is the clearance. Rod bearing clearance should be checked in the same way. We used a bore gauge and micrometers from Powerhouse Products.
