Cylinder head flow figures have more effect on cam selection than any other product. If you've chosen the right heads, you can select a cam that'll match their performance and create power where you need it. You wouldn't want to run a head in your daily driver that flows great at 0.800-inch lift any more than you'd want a cam that runs best at 8,000 rpm.

Once you've selected your heads, take their flow figures to the cam manufacturer and tell them what you want your engine to do. They should be able to help you pick the best grind.Your intake manifold choice also affects cam selection. A good dual-plane will give an engine an operating range from around idle to 6,000+ rpm, so you'd want your cam's power band to follow that.

Blowers and EFI can both help overcome the deficit of running too big a cam. With blowers you can almost always run a cam that'd be way to big for a N/A motor. EFI, is a little bit less tolerant, but it can still accept more lift and duration than you might think.

Oiling issues were almost the demise of solid roller tappets on the street. But cam companies like Crower, (shown), and others have addressed the low-speed street oiling problems by designing ingenious tappets with pressurized oiling grooves in them.

Rocker arm ratio can play a big part in performance too. When you're running a flat-tappet cam, increasing the rocker ratio mimics the changes you'd make with a roller lobe. While certain roller lobes are ground specifically to work within a certain rocker arm ratio envelope.
