Electronic Fuel Injection - EFI In A Carb's Clothing

To fire the injectors the computer reads the same signal from the distributor that a tachometer would use. Virtually any conventional, HEI, or CD distributor can be used. In this case, we chose a Flamethrower from Pertronix because, like the injectors, it has a vintage look with modern technology hidden inside.

EFI uses a variety of sensors, this is the IAT sensor. It simply snaps in place. In this application it was installed in the rear throttle body.

Regardless of how many throttle bodies are being used, only one TPS is required. It's generally fitted to a center throttle body just to keep it out of sight.

On those units that aren't fitted with a TPS, the hold-down screws serve as throttle blade stops. Note the easy to use idle air adjustment knob and locknut.

Another required sender is the CTS. As well as telling the computer to enrich the mixture when the engine is cold, it can also make the computer activate the engine cooling fan.

This is the MAP sensor, it reads manifold vacuum. There are also those suited for blown applications where the manifold is under pressure.

For this three-two installation Ken Farrell fashioned a wire loom to hide the injector leads. Most of those who looked at this system on Barry White's roadster didn't realize it was electronic fuel injection.

The computer for the Mooneyes system is sophisticated, but not complicated. It comes ready to run right out of the box and normally only a few simple adjustments are necessary.

If adjustments are necessary, these are the tools needed. The adjustment knob on the small box allows the pulse width of the injectors to be increased or decreased. The larger touch pad control is used to change operating parameters in the computer.

The touch pad has a readout that will show values that the computer is receiving from the various sensors. Basically, the system is tuned by changing the values that cause the computer to react to those inputs.

Like all other EFI systems, this one requires a high-pressure pump, and the proper filters. Both are included in the Mooneyes kit.
