While remaining of powdered metal construction as in other Northstar engines, the rods are redesigned and heat-treated to tolerate higher stress. The pistons are anodized in the ring land area for heat and wear resistance, while the skirts receive an anti-friction coating. The pin diameter has been increased to 24mm to cope with the loads of supercharging.
