1962 Buick Invicta Wagon Original Engine Bay View
The original 401 Nailhead V-8 in all its greasy, 43-year-old glory! It actually ran fine and could have been used as is...Air Ride Technologies chose to have Jasper Racing Engines work their magic on it. One thing about it, there is nowhere to go but up!

0501Cr Air 04 Z
Here's why Air Ride uses Jasper--they have it! "It" can be anything you imagine relevant to a drivetrain. This is just a sample of the crankshaft inventory Jasper carries; they build over 7,000 engines, transmissions, and rearends a month!

0501Cr Air 05 Z
The choice of using a 700-R4 overdrive required a bit of trans tunnel surgery due to the increased girth (of the trans body!). Not hard work, really, but necessary (and totally worth it) for the gain in performance.

Air Ride had the entire wagon media-blasted, including the front of the frame, inner fenders, and firewall. The only drawback is that everything has to be removed prior to blasting--unless you want media floating around in unreachable crevices forever!

0501Cr Air 07 Z
There probably is no "graceful" way to paint an engine...it's a matter of cleaning, taping, and spray bombing! Some guys spend a lot of time smoothing out the block for a show-car finish--this was a simple wipe clean and paint deal. An instead of using simple engine spray paint, Bret chose to use automotive paint for a longer lasting finish.

And with all of the miscellaneous parts, you can go as crazy as you want or stick to the simple plan; Bret chose the middle of the road option, spraying the parts an accenting darker blue metallic.

Things were starting to take shape with the engine back in its bay with the March Performance pulleys mounted and Vintage Air A/C compressor installed. From here, it was just a matter of running the wiring and plumbing as well as fabricating new cover panels. Surrounding sheetmetal was painted satin black to minimize subtle ripples that would otherwise stand out under a gloss finish.

As you may know, MSD now offers its Ready-to-Run billet electronic distributor for the Buick Nailhead. The external coil was mounted to the back of the driver's side cylinder head, out of view but easily accessible. Air Ride fabricated an adapter to mate the Holley EFI throttle body to the stock intake, which is a plug-and-play system once installed.

As pretty as it is, the Be Cool aluminum radiator was hidden by a custom-made aluminum panel (perfect for resting your tools on!). Immediately behind you can see a Pi-Thon radiator hose connector, and to the right, the milled cap for the windshield washer fluid reservoir.

1962 Buick Invicta Wagon Engine Bay View Finished
Colorful, yet subtle, is how Bret describes AirWagon's engine compartment, and we agree! Everything is neatly mounted and finished, yet easy to service if need be. Having an "artsy" bay just leads to headaches in the future when service time calls...this one is easy to clean, easy to service, and looks great. Best of all, anyone with a little enthusiasm, some talent, and a bit of spare time can accomplish this with a minimum amount of cash!
