Intake Manifold 1965 Dodge Coronet
Deja vu all over again. Our '65 Coronet test mule is back on the dyno for some more flogging. This time we're trying to find the perfect intake manifold.

From right to left we have a TM6, the Performer RPM and the super tall Victor 383. The old TM6 came from a buddy to see how it would stack up against the new Performer RPM and the Victor 383. We ran out of time and didn't get to test it but we did flog the other two manifolds.

Intake Manifold Carb Spacers
When you own a CNC milling machine, you can make your own carb spacers! This special part was made by taking a two-inch tall Moroso four-hole unit and carving away all of the sharp corners. This spacer really worked, adding 13 ft.-lbs. over a one-inch open spacer when mounted on the Performer RPM manifold.

None of the manifolds were ported, but we did spend a few minutes with a coarse sanding roll blending the spacers to the manifold. We were just looking for a smooth transition without any big steps or ledges in the way of the airflow.

Intake Manifold
The K&N stub stack can be an easy way to pick up some power on some engines. Our setup didn't like it for some reason. The carburetor leaned out dramatically when the stub stack was installed and we lost significant horsepower.

Intake Manifold
We're running a homemade ram-air setup with a large four-inch tall K&N filter element. No power difference was noted when the air cleaner was installed or removed which tells us that these K&N filters really flow the air.

Intake Manifold
Testing multiple intake manifolds and spacers during a chassis dyno test session is a real thrash! Here we are rushing through another swap. One trick that really works on the intake gasket is to glue the paper gaskets onto the steel bathtub and then fully coat the paper gaskets with white grease. That allows you to reuse the same intake gasket set over and over.

Our trunk was full of manifolds and related gear when we pulled into McGee's Auto Service for our date with their DynoJet. One nice thing about this '65 Dodge is that the trunk is big enough to haul around everything you need for a dyno session.

Both of these Edelbrock carbs are rated at 800 cfm and they made basically identical power on our motor. We did have to richen the secondary jet size one size on the #1412 AFB to have it equal the air/fuel ratio of the #1812 AVS.

If you're going to make some serious power then you need a good way to hold the car to the dyno. (or on the trailer when it breaks) We fabbed up some tie down plates and welded them to the bottom of our shock mounts.
