In Final Eliminations at the 2013 AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge, we had a battle of just two engine types: the Ford Cobra four-valves, which dominated the qualifying session, and the Chevrolet LS engines, which were within striking distance. Late-model performance definitely stole the limelight; for the first time, no traditional older muscle car V-8 survived qualifying eliminations. The showdown was between the overhead quad cam Fords and the pushrod engine represented by the LS. Interestingly, breaking down the numbers, the LS engines made more peak power than the top two mods, but when the final tally was added, the mods owned the field.

Jon Kaase Racing's mod took the crown as the Engine Master's Championship engine and is dissected and detailed in a full feature in this issue. Here, we take a look at the other finalists with a brief description of their competition engines and detailed engine specifications, along with the full dyno tables from their qualifying efforts.

Accufab Racing
Ontario, CA
401ci Ford Four-Valve Mod

Accufab is a specialist manufacturing company best known for high-quality throttle bodies, EFI components, and late-model Ford drag racing success. The team, consisting of John Mihovetz and Fred Grochulski, came to the event as first-time competitors and cleaned house in qualifying to stand as the top qualifying engine. To those in the know, this came as no surprise, as these men have more experience with modding the mod Ford than any we can think of. Although their racing R&D is focused on unbelievable turbo-boosted engines, there was little doubt that their skills transferred to the realm of naturally aspirated power.

Hurdle one for the mod was stretching the capacity to meet the 400ci minimum for the competition, accomplished through a 3.740-inch bore and a custom Bryant 4.560-inch stroke crank. The Ford mod 5.4 block was topped with a set of heavily reworked Ford GT heads with an extensively modified Ford Racing Cobra R intake manifold and Accufab throttle body. The engine was assembled with extreme precision, and this jewel spun up the rpm with a smoothness and unique sound unrivaled by anything we had seen. Accufab finished Final Eliminations in Second Place.

BES Racing
Guilford, IN
401ci Ford Four-Valve Mod

Tony Bischoff and the BES Racing team have been multi-event winners of the AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge, including a victory in the Xtreme category in 2011. Always a favorite contender, the crew brought a wild Ford mod four-valve engine to the show for 2013. The Ford modular 5.4 block was taken to a displacement of 401 ci with a bore size of 3.702 inches and a stroke of 4.650 inches. As with the other two mod motor competitors, Bischoff's mod was topped with a set of Ford GT four-valve heads, however, the four-barrel single-plane intake manifold was a departure from the induction of the other mods. A Sullivan Performance manifold directed the air coming in via a Ron's Fuel Injection Systems throttle body.

Bischoff's mod was short of the other two in event scoring, but in outright horsepower this engine was a monster. Top-end output was far above what the other mods were producing, with an astounding 775 peak horsepower recorded at the very top of the test rpm range. That performance is very near 2 hp per cubic inch from a big-inch mod Ford. Bischoff's effort was good enough to earn Third Place at the event and contributed to the three Ford mod motors entered sweeping the event's top three final positions.
